Dim Lights Thick Smoke Promotion - Eric McFadden: Interview

From his home in the Bay Area our friend Eric Mcfadden shares a few stories with DLTSP about his current release “Train to Salvation”, early influences, Far Away Brothers, Stockholm Syndrome, in addition to more!

Just Released Benefit DVD *Free From Pain* - The "Free From Pain"ť benefit show raised money for a very special woman, Tiffany Travalent. Tiffany spent nine years as an artists liaison for Bill Graham Presents and a backstage manager at San Francisco's Warfield Theater and Fillmore concert hall, where she made many lasting friends both inside and outside the music business. For six years Tiffany has battled severe chronic pain, stemming from an emergency surgery she suddenly had to undergo in 2003. Tiffany has tried every viable avenue since then to relieve that pain, seeking medical help from doctors all over the world. She has been unable to return to work and faces continuing insurmountable medical expenses. On March 10, 2007, a world-renown group of musicians gathered at 12 Galaxies in San Francisco to support, honor and most importantly, to raise money for their friend Tiffany. Tiffany describes the evening as “a music lover’s dream.” And fortunately for music lovers, this outstanding night of performances by phenomenal artists was professionally captured on video, edited and is now available for purchase. The unique DVD, entitled, “Free from Pain,” is not only a one-of-a-kind musical masterpiece, but will tug at your heartstrings as you witness musicians performing at their peak for the love of Tiffany. This musical passion has been captured in a must-be-experienced DVD. Artists who volunteered their talents to appear on the DVD include Bernie Worrell and Jerry Harrison -- reunited for the first time since Talking Heads; legendary Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, who served up a spicy set with his signature backbeat, keeping it uniquely funky; Eric McFadden, the guitar virtuoso, played throughout the night, intricately weaving hot licks and multi-layered, vital guitar sounds. During one set, he was joined by Pete Sears and Seth Ford-Young, playing original music from Eric’s latest cds. Also featured are pat mAcdonald, Loop!station, Teenage Harlets, Ronkat Spearman and many other great players. Please click on this link http://www.filmbaby.com/films/4535 to place your order only $20 each.

The Stockholm Syndrome, featuring your friends Dave Schools, Eric McFadden, Jerry Joseph, Wally Ingram and Danny Louis, recentley finished recording and mixing their first record in 5 years. Stay tuned for release date and tour dates beginning in February. Eric returns to Mexico in mid March for The Zihautanejo International Guitar Festival. Also, keep your eyes and hears peeled for an upcoming releases from Faraway Brothers, featuring Ed Ivey, Eric McFadden, Paulo Baldi and Chip Roland and The Legendary Sons of Crack Daniels.

Jambase.com: ERIC MCFADDEN ON TOUR - Eric McFadden may just be one of the hardest working performers in the business. Fresh off a European tour with Eric Burdon and the New Animals, McFadden returns to the states and hits the ground running. He will finish out the spring on the road with the Eric McFadden Trio in support of their new album, Joy of Suffering.

The Eric McFadden Trio features McFadden on guitar and vocals and James Whiton on the acoustic bass along side drummer Jeff Cohen a long-time friend and musical compatriot - this dynamic line-up is the latest incarnation for one of music's most prolific personalities. In addition to being in several successful bands on the west coast, McFadden has independently produced several solo albums which are regarded as underground masterpieces by fans and critics alike. Guitar Player Magazine: Eric McFadden’s Multi-Colored Iconoclastic Gypsy Soul - Eric McFadden was destined to be different. His mother sang in an early incarnation of the Fugs, the Ed Saunders-led New York ensemble that was arguably the first underground rock band. Bob Dylan slept on the McFadden couch while Eric was still in the womb, and counter culture poet (and neighbor) Allen Ginsberg successfully protested when the family was faced with eviction from their Greenwich Village apartment. McFadden’s father turned Eric on to Jimi Hendrix and the Mahavishnu Orchestra at a young age—influences he would combine with flamenco, punk, and heavy metal to form a unique style. Eric McFadden along with friend / collaborater, Pat MacDonald, have just finished an 8 song ep to be released late February. The duo goes under the name Crack Daniels, named after the deceased father of the two half brothers, Cracker and Blacker Daniels. Look for their new release, Medicine, coming out soon. What hideous whiskey-soaked love tryst begat the sons of Crack Daniels I fear to imagine. Somewhere in the backwoods of radio free America, their cracklin souls scratched out of the transistor speakers into our generation. Like time-warped Troubadours from a past with talent unlike todays, the sons of Crack Daniels have grown together in a new musical form. Cracker and Blacker create something entirely unique and apart from their own sounds. Together they create something that Morphine, Primus and Hank Williams would all hear in their waking nightmares.

Bad Reputation records out of Paris, France has released a two cd set of Eric's music spanning the last 10 years of his recording career. The release is titlied "Dementia". If you are in the U.S. the cd can be ordered through the labels website, http://www.badreputation.fr. Check out this other cool French site about Eric!

Also, thanks to Norwood Fisher, Stan Hirsch, Brian Jordan and Eric Burdon for sitting in.

The new release from EMT, "Joy of Suffering" will be officially released on Terminus records on October 4th. Eric and James are joined by long time musical collaborator and friend, Paulo Baldi on drums. Eric's 2003 solo release, "Devil Moon", has been re-released By Bad Reputation out of Paris, France. The company will also be releasing a two cd compilation of Eric's music in November to be distributed in France and certain sorounding European territories.

it sounds like a really eerie carnival is on the outskirts of town.  From flamenco to metal and all stops in-between, this band will rock you.  There's a Tom Waits-y seediness to the songs and lyrics, but sometimes it's so heavy it may crush you with the undead spirit of motorhead...when the band is done feasting on your bones, you will thank them and ask them to come again."  -The Mishky / Telluride Daily Planet, August 2004

EMT's release "Diamonds to Coal" is available through cdbaby, Borders Books and Music, Amoeba Records in San Francisco and most Tower Record stores in California.

Summer 2005: EMT is on the road again bringing the rock and have reunited for this tour with original drum master Jeff "The Commander" Anthony. check the gigs page for tour dates. Eric and Wally sat in with Widespread Panic at Ceasers Tahoe and at the Greek in Berkeley. fun was had by all.

January 2005: Eric and his percussive pal Wally Ingram, successfully completed a new record at Prairie Sun Studios, which is located on a chicken ranch in Cotati, California. The man behind the board is one talented Mr. Oz Fritz.  A slew of fine players appear on this sound recording. Slang is the brainchild of a couple of Eric's pals, Dave Schools (Widespread Panic) and Layng Martine III. The Bellwether Project, a collection of ten unique tracks, stems from a decade long friendship and the gradual intertwining of musical sensibilities. It is a record of complementary forces, fusing Schools' roots in improvisational rock with Martine's work in musical montage.
